Admission Requirements:
• High School Diploma with 50% or better in English, or equivalent
or:
• GED (General Education Development) with proficiency in English at the Grade 12 level
or:
Note: Individuals who have completed their high school outside of Canada may be required to complete a listening test. Based on the results of this test, individuals may be required to register in the course, Vocabulary for Early Childhood Education.

Additional Required Information
• Students must have the ability to meet the applicable outcomes within the training standards for this
program. Thus, fitness to complete the practicum components that would bear relevance to the
academic or field placement requirements of the program may impede successful admission into the
program;
• It is also recommended that students have experience with preschool children in a licensed child care
setting.
Upon acceptance into the ECE program and prior to the start of classes, the following
requirements must be completed:
• Immunization/Health record;
• A Standard First Aid Certificate;
• A Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation course (Infant/Child or Basic CPR);
• Police Record Check

Students in programs or occupations involving direct contact with vulnerable persons are required to undergo a police record check.
It is important that potential students understand that the above requirements may impede them from
successful admission, completing their full program, and/or securing employment. Students doing a
field placement may be required to meet the same physical assessment and immunization requirements
as those for the staff employed by the agency where the placement is taking place.

Courses

ECE 101 Child Development I (2 Credits)
This course focuses on the development of the child from conception to 8 years focusing on the physical child
and the thinking child.

ECE 102 Child Development II (2 Credits)
This course is a continuation of Child Development I and covers the social child and the whole child, including
atypical development.

ECE 203 Psychology of infancy and early childhood (2 Credits)
This course is a study of the interaction of a child's heredity and his environment as they influence his
development from age two to age six. The general areas studied include physical, emotional, social and
cognitive development

ECE 204 Developing Through Play I (2 Credits)
This course explores the role of play in children’s development and how play is integral to a child’s
developmental needs. Students will develop understanding of the relationship of play to the different
developmental stages, as well as the role of the environment and the early childhood practitioner in enhancing
play.

ECE 205 Developing Through Play II (1 Credit)
This course focuses on the planning of inclusive and appropriate play environments, including indoor and
outdoor play experiences.

ECE 206 Literacy and the Developing Child (2 Credits)
This course provides students with an understanding of the emergence and development of literacy in young
children.

ECE 207 Health, Safety and Nutrition (2 Credits)
This course focuses on early childhood nutrition, health and safety issues, which will enable the professional to
create safe and healthy environments for children and families.

ECE 208 Introduction to Early Childhood Education (2 Credits)
This course focuses on understanding the goals and essential components for the development of successful
early childhood programs.

ECE 300 Program Planning I (2 Credits)
This introductory course provides the values and conceptual framework for planning child-centered
developmentally appropriate programs for children.

ECE 301 Program Planning II (2 Credits)
Building on existing knowledge and frameworks, students will learn to plan and implement routines and
activities, indoors and outdoors, that foster healthy growth and development.

ECE 302 Introduction to Creative Expression (1 Credit)
Students will be introduced to the value of music, dance, drama and visual art activities that enhance creativity
and self-expression, and support all areas of development.
It is also focuses on increasing the students’ appreciation of fine arts and their role in providing a
developmentally sound program for children in childcare.

ECE 303 Infant and Toddler Care (2 Credits)
This course focuses on the development of appropriate strategies and skills to provide developmentally
appropriate care for infants and toddlers. The central role of the caregiver and of daily routines will be
emphasized.

ECE 304 Guiding Children’s Behaviour (2 Credits)
This course provides an understanding of children’s behaviour in developmental context and importance of
realistic expectations of children in various stages.

ECE 305 Early Childhood Education Practicum
Prerequisite: Introduction to Early Childhood Education and Child Development I or department consent.
Provides an opportunity to apply skills and knowledge in appropriate childcare settings under the supervision
of the practicum supervisor and a designated supervisor in the childcare setting.
