PARALEGAL STUDIES (Judicial Secretary) Certificate Program

Canada College offers a Certificate Program in Legal Secretary as online learning.

Graduates will be prepared to work under the supervision of licensed attorneys in law firms; law departments of corporations and financial institutions. This program is designed to improve the efficiency, economy, and availability of legal services.

It is a Certificate program given by Canada College. It is not a licensing program with any governmental bodies.

Mode: Distance Education
Needed Material/Equipment: Computer with high-speed access to internet and installed webcam, familiarity with Skype and Paltalk.

AA 223 Introduction to Microsoft Word with Keyboarding 3 Credit Hours
This course focuses on learning the keyboard and develops proper keyboarding technique, speed, and accuracy. It introduces the Windows environment and basic word processing skills, such as editing, saving, changing appearance, using spell check, and printing, using Microsoft Office 2003.

Formatting for basic business documents, such as letters, memoranda, resumes and business reports, is also covered. Ergonomics, health issues in the workplace, and computer concepts, including email, are discussed as related to working with the computer. Lab time outside of class
time will be required.

AA 224 Advanced Word Processing with PowerPoint 3 Credit Hours
This course is designed to give students intensive training in word processing applications that are commonly found in business. Students will learn to process documents such as letters, tables, memos, and reports. Students will also explore the advanced capabilities of word processing
software including desktop publishing and PowerPoint.

CS 125 Introduction to Computer Spreadsheets 3 Credit Hours
A hands-on computer approach to spreadsheet analysis, performance management, and graphics.

The student will learn how to enter data, develop formulas, correct mistakes, use the special formula functions, print the worksheet, and combine files and graphic data. Upon completion of the course, the student should have the necessary tools to develop worksheets for such applications as personal financial planning, budgets, cost projections, and checkbook registry.

EN 101 English I: Expository Writing 3 Credit Hours
This course focuses on the development of expository writing skills toward the goal of mastering the formal essay. Assigned model essays will be analyzed and discussed, and the writing process will be emphasized with concentration on reading comprehension, grammar, punctuation, spelling, organization, development, style, and originality of thought and expression. Modes of expression for essays will include at least description/ narration, comparison/contrast, classification/division, cause and effect, and argumentation. Students will be introduced to summarizing, analyzing, and synthesizing. A library-researched paper will be included.

GV 105 The Canadian Legal System 3 Credit Hours
This course analyzes the Canadian court system, including state, federal, trial, and appellate courts.
A text-case method is used to examine the judicial process from the institution of a lawsuit to the appeal of a judgment. This course examines civil, criminal, and constitutional law. A library component will be included.

LA 103 Business Law and the Legal Environment 3 Credit Hours
After a study of the nature of kinds of law, and the judicial system in which it operates, students examine state and federal law as an instrument of social control within the context of the legal environment of business. Specific focus is also given to property law, consumer protection,
employment, and the creation and enforceability of contracts.

LA 107 Criminal Law 3 Credit Hours
This course introduces students to the nature and classification of crimes, defenses, and special
doctrines controlling the disposition of criminal matters within the judicial system. In addition to text materials, students use edited cases to analyze and define specific criminal offenses.

LA 141 Real Estate Law 3 Credit Hours
An analysis of the legal aspects of transferring real estate including the essential documents: the offer, acceptance, purchase and sale agreement, mortgage and promissory note forms, and deed preparation. Forms of ownership, warranties, and title examination practices are also examined.

LA 203 Law Office Management 3 Credit Hours
Prerequisite: Completion of one-half the credits toward a certificate or degree, including GV 105 and a keyboarding skill of 35 WPM.
An examination of the responsibilities of both the legal office assistant and paralegal, including the preparation and processing of legal documents, time management, the attorney/client relationship, and the nature and role of law office employees.

LA 205 Legal Research and Writing 3 Credit Hours
Prerequisite: GV 105.
Students are trained to use a law library to solve basic problems in legal research. With the use of reporters, citators, codes, and commentaries found in books and electronic data bases such as CDROM, students develop effective legal research techniques and strategies. Students also practice the mechanics of effective legal writing by drafting various legal documents including case briefs.

This program trains you to be able to handle tasks at workplace.

* The credit hours are calculated on the basis of one credit per 15 hours of class/assignment, online work and homework. There is a final exam that has to be done in campus or on camera.
